Norway progress to Women's World Cup last 16 after seeing off Ivory Coast

Norway reach the last 16 of the Women's World Cup after securing a 3-1 win against Ivory Coast in their Group B clash in Moncton.

Norway have reached the last 16 of the Women's World Cup after securing a 3-1 win against Ivory Coast in their Group B clash in Moncton.

The Scandinavians took the lead after just six minutes when a looping ball over the top was met by Ada Hegerberg and slotted home from a tight angle.

Ivory Coast held on valiantly to go in at the break just one goal down but Norway went on to double their lead just after the hour through Hegerberg's second, a simple finish from a one-on-one situation following Solveig Gulbrandsen's through-ball.

The provider then turned goalscorer in the 67th minute as she headed home Lene Mykjaland's long-range free kick to kill off the Ivory Coast challenge.

Ange Nguessan grabbed a consolation for the World Cup debutantes in the 71st minute, a 25-yard strike into the top corner, but her side could not build on their momentum thereafter.

The result sees Norway finish second in their group, behind Germany on goal difference, while Ivory Coast sit bottom.
