Antonio Conte: 'Andrea Pirlo deserves Ballon d'Or'

Juventus coach Antonio Conte insists that he would choose Andrea Pirlo ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for Ballon d'Or contention.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has insisted that Serie A veteran Andrea Pirlo deserves his place on this season's Ballon d'Or shortlist, ranking him alongside rivals for world football's top individual honour.

Pirlo was the only player from Serie A to make FIFA's longlist for the accolade, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Franck Ribery and Lionel Messi leading the way in terms of recognition.

Conte has insisted that his veteran midfield linchpin is worthy of consideration as world football's most consistent performer, remaining adamant that he would pick Pirlo ahead of any player or a Ballon d'Or nomination.

He told Verissimo: "It is difficult to choose between Messi and Ronaldo, but I would always give the Ballon d'Or to Pirlo.

"He is our player and may God keep him safe!"

The 34-year-old has made 15 appearances for the Bianconeri so far this season, scoring three times including a direct free kick against Scudetto rivals Napoli before the international break.
