Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini has said that he 'was not surprised' that Real Madrid were handed a late penalty in Wednesday night's Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Bernabeu.

Madrid entered the clash holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg of their quarter-final, but Juventus hit back with three goals of their own to leave the tie level at 3-3 entering stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo sent Los Blancos into the final four, however, when he converted from the penalty spot after Medhi Benatia had felled Lucas Vazquez, with the aftermath seeing Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon receive a straight red card.

Madrid booked their spot in last season's quarter-finals in extra time after Bayern Munich had Arturo Vidal sent off, and Chiellini has accused the officials of favouring the Spanish giants once again.

"It shouldn't be surprising, Bayern Munich went through it last year and this was Juve's turn," Chiellini told Mediaset Premium. "Between the first leg and this one, just about everything happened. It's laughable that the Italian refereeing designator said things are going well in the Champions League.

"Nobody thought we could turn it around, but we believed and it'll help us for the next Champions League campaigns. It'll be an objective for the future."

Madrid are bidding to win the Champions League for the third season in a row.
