Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers: 'We can't just rely on Steven Gerrard to save us'

Brendan Rodgers urges his Liverpool players not to rely on Steven Gerrard to save their Champions League campaign against Basel this evening.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has urged his players not to rely on Steven Gerrard to save their Champions League campaign.

The Merseyside outfit must win tonight's crucial group match against Basel at Anfield in order to reach the knockout rounds of the elite European competition.

This week 10 years ago, Gerrard was the hero as he fired Liverpool into the next round with a stunning strike against Olympiacos, and the team went on to win their fifth crown in the tournament.

However, Rodgers has warned against relying on individuals and believes that a strong team performance is vital.

"This is a competition that has a great history here for Liverpool," the Daily Star quotes Rodgers as saying. "That Olympiacos game was a great part of that. It is up to the players here to write themselves into folklore by winning the game.

"We can't just rely on Steven, this has to be a team performance. Others have to step up and be a catalyst for the team."

Liverpool have secured just one victory from their five games in Group B.
