Danny Murphy: 'Brendan Rodgers will keep his job'

Danny Murphy insists that Brendan Rodgers deserves to remain at Liverpool even if they fail to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Danny Murphy is adamant that Liverpool will not sack manager Brendan Rodgers, even if they fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Reds need to beat Basel in their match on Tuesday at Anfield to advance to the last 16 of the competition, where they have struggled to score in front of their supporters this season.

However, Murphy has insisted that Rodgers deserves longer in the job despite his side being all but out of the Premier League title race, while he has also dismissed the idea of replacing him with Andre Villas-Boas.

Murphy told talkSPORT: "Brendan will keep his job, no matter what. He deserves that.

"But if for some reason – and it would be a shock – if he left, AVB would not be on the list of 20 managers next for Liverpool, never mind one.

"It's ridiculous. He failed at Chelsea, he failed at Tottenham so why would you take him at Liverpool?"

Rodgers has been in charge at Anfield since 2012.
