England boss Roy Hodgson hopeful Daniel Sturridge will be fit for Euro 2016

England manager Roy Hodgson is hopeful that Daniel Sturridge will be fit for Euro 2016.

England manager Roy Hodgson has claimed that Daniel Sturridge is still in contention to make the final Euro 2016 squad if the Liverpool striker proves his fitness on Monday.

There have been doubts over Sturridge's fitness as he was left out of tonight's squad after missing this week's training sessions with a calf injury.

The 26-year-old was forced to watch from the sidelines as Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney scored in a 2-1 victory over Australia at the Stadium of Light.

There have been suggestions that 18-year-old Rashford, who became the youngest ever player to score on his England debut this evening, could be taken to the Euros if Sturridge is unfit, but Hodgson has not ruled out the Liverpool forward.

"It will be interesting to see how [Sturridge] gets on over the weekend," BBC Sport quotes Hodgson as saying. "I hope he trains on Monday and then it won't be a reason for me to leave him out of the 23."

Hodgson has until 11pm on Tuesday to trim his 26-man squad down to 23.
