FC Gomel are somewhat of an unknown quantity to many. Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Liverpool's Europa League opponents.

Premier League side Liverpool will be making a trip into the virtual unknown tomorrow evening when they take on FC Gomel in a Europa League qualifier.

You can be forgiven for knowing very little about the Belarusian club, who are currently embarking on only their seventh European adventure.

So, for those with little or no knowledge of FC Gomel, Sports Mole has taken a closer look at what Brendan Rodgers can expect from his first competitive match in charge of the Reds.

Location

Gomel, situated in South-East of Belarus, is the country's second-largest city behind the capital Minsk. It stands on the back of the Sozh river and is only a few miles away from the border with Ukraine.

The club's current home ground, named the Central Stadium, was built in 2005. It holds an estimated 14,307 people.

Previous success

In truth, the trophy cabinets of Liverpool and FC Gomel do not compare. While the English club's honours list is positively bulging, FC Gomel have only won major trophies.

They include one league title, two national cups and one super cup.

Gomel also currently sit third in the league table.

Manager and players

Having had spells as an assistant at numerous clubs, Oleg Kubarev made the step up to management with FC Gomel in 2009. Since then he has guided the team to a national cup and super cup success.

Polish midfielder Tomasz Nowak is considered to be the club's biggest threat to Liverpool, having earned himself a reputation as a goalscoring midfielder during his career.

Something interesting

Having been formed in 1959, FC Gomel has gone through five name changes to reach their current guise. They started off as Lokomotiv Gomel, before going on to be Spartak Gomel, Gomselmash Gomel, Mashinostroitel Gomel, Gomselmash Gomel and finally FC Gomel in 1995.
