Pardew backs Rodgers to succeed

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers should have brought in a replacement for striker Andy Carroll.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is confident that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers can "deal" with the pressure at Anfield but believes that the Northern Irishman should have brought in more reinforcements in the summer window.

The Magpies go up against the Merseyside outfit on Sunday and Pardew believes that Rodgers was let down by Anfield's American owners after they failed to bring in a replacement for out-going Andy Carroll, who is on loan at West Ham United.

"I think Brendan can deal with it," Pardew told BBC Newcastle. "He didn't get the tools he needed and if you're going to create the vision he wants, you've got to have the tools.

"As I understand it, he's a striker short. If he didn't want [Carroll], which we know because we were involved, then he should have had a replacement."

Newcastle haven't won a league game at Anfield for 18 years.
