Tommy Smith: 'Luis Suarez owed an apology from Phil Dowd'

Liverpool legend Tommy Smith says that Luis Suarez deserves an apology from referee Phil Dowd after the official failed to send Kevin Mirallas off for a poor challenge in the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool legend Tommy Smith feels that Luis Suarez deserves an apology from referee Phil Dowd.

Suarez was on the receiving end of a high tackle from Kevin Mirallas in last Saturday's 3-3 draw with Everton.

Mirallas admitted that the challenge deserved a red card, and Smith thinks that the official owes the Uruguayan forward an explanation.

"[Suarez] deserves more than sympathy, he deserves an apology," said Smith in his Liverpool Echo column.

"And for me it should come from referee Phil Dowd who had ages to make up his mind about the incident and who should, have course, pulled out a red card.

"Phil Dowd surely lacked the conviction to do it [at Goodison Park]?"

Liverpool take on Hull City on Sunday.
