Daniel Sturridge: 'I can cope with pressure'

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge vows to thrive under the pressure of being the club's leading attacker this season, following Luis Suarez's departure to Barcelona.

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has insisted that he can cope with the pressure of being the leading man in the club's attack this season.

Luis Suarez carried Liverpool's fight for the Premier League title last season, but the Uruguayan has since departed for Barcelona.

Sturridge made a strong start to the 2014-15 Premier League campaign against Southampton this afternoon, scoring the winner 10 minutes from time.

"There's pressure on myself to get the goals now. With Luis [Suarez] out the team and of course he scored 30 odds goals last season," he told Sky Sports News.

"It's important for me and the other lads to step up and Raheem [Sterling] showed today that he's got a cool head and he can finish.

"I'm glad that he's continuing the scoring into the season. He's improving all the time. It's important as a collective unit we all provide the goals."

Nathaniel Clyne equalised for Southampton after Raheem Sterling had sent the home side into the lead.
