Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a surprise swoop for former Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes, who is into the final year of his contract at Ligue 1 club Lille.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes.

The 24-year-old is currently plying his trade in France at Lille, with the diminutive enforcer departing the Theatre of Dreams during the summer of 2020.

After spending the 2020-21 term on loan at Boavista in the Primeira Liga, Gomes has established himself as a first-team regular for Les Dogues over the past three years.

The midfielder made 31 appearances in Ligue 1 last season for Lille, assisting on eight occasions, earning a place in Lee Carsley's England squad during the September international window.

Making his Three Lions debut off the bench at the Republic of Ireland, Gomes won his full debut for England three days later on September 10, when he started the 2-0 success over Finland at Wembley.

Liverpool 'eyeing' move for ex-Man United youngster Gomes

According to Football Insider via the Liverpool Echo, Lille star Gomes could be set for a high-profile Premier League return at the end of the current campaign.

The report claims that top-flight title challengers Liverpool are eyeing up a surprise swoop for the Under-21 European Championships winner.

It is understood that Reds scouts were in attendance at Wembley earlier this month as Gomes played the full 90 minutes for England against Finland.

The 24-year-old joined Three Lions stalwart Declan Rice in the engine room, tasked with controlling the tempo of the match against the visiting Finns.

As well as Liverpool, it is believed that Newcastle United are extremely keen on Gomes, making the midfielder their top target ahead of the January transfer window.

Is Gomes needed at Liverpool?

With less than 12 months left on his current deal at Decathlon Arena, Gomes is the topic of intense transfer speculation ahead of the winter trading point.

The England international will be able to sign pre-contract agreements with clubs outside of Ligue 1 when the January window opens on New Year's Day.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool submit a concrete offer for Gomes, who would face difficulty breaking into the first XI at Anfield.

Arne Slot has enjoyed deploying a midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai so far this campaign, with the Reds winning three of their opening four Premier League contests.
