Matt Le Tissier: 'Southampton fans should thank Rickie Lambert'

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes that fans should not begrudge Rickie Lambert for joining Liverpool.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has urged fans not to begrudge Rickie Lambert for leaving the club to join Liverpool.

Lambert, 32, left the Saints on Monday following a five-year spell at St Mary's Stadium.

Despite the striker choosing to depart Southampton, Le Tissier believes that supporters should be thankful for Lambert's service to the club.

"He's been fantastic for us for five years. He dragged us up from League One to the Premier League," he told the Southern Daily Echo. "The first thing I want to say is that I'd think no Saints fan can begrudge Rickie Lambert that move.

"Now he's going to play for his boyhood club in the Premier League and Champions League."

Liverpool are understood to have paid Southampton around £4m to sign the England international.
