Daniel Sturridge signs new long-term Liverpool contract

Daniel Sturridge puts pen to paper on a new long-term contract until 2019 at Liverpool, admitting that it is an "emotional day".

Liverpool have announced that striker Daniel Sturridge has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract running until 2019.

Manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed last week that the club have been in talks with the England international about putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

Sturridge has been heavily missed by Liverpool over the last six games due to a thigh injury, which he picked up while training for England last month.

The 25-year-old hit scintillating form for the Reds last season by finding the back of the net 21 times in the Premier League.

"It feels great," Sturridge told the club's official website. "It's a big, big day in my life to commit to this club and to give the club my best years, which are ahead of me.

"I am thankful for the opportunity and that is the reason I committed my future. Everyone has been great with me, from the fans to the staff to the players, so it was an easy decision. I'm happy with how everything is going."

Sturridge, who moved to Anfield from Chelsea back in January last year, added a message on his Instagram account, which said: "We did it!! Proud to announce I've signed a new long term contract with Liverpool football club. I'm buzzing. All the hard work has paid off but continues because there is nothing I want more than to life trophies and be successful with this club.

"Grateful to God for this opportunity. I want to thank the fans, players and the coaching staff. My family have been there for me throughout my whole life and without them this wouldn't have been possible. Love you guys. It's an emotional day believe me. #redordead #LFC #lafamilia"
