Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne: 'We had to kill the game against Gladbach'

Kevin De Bruyne says that he and his Manchester City teammates needed to 'kill the game' against Borussia Monchengladbach when Fernandinho was sent off.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has claimed that he and his teammates needed to 'kill the game' after Fernandinho was sent off in the second half of tonight's Champions League match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

David Silva cancelled out Raffael's opener on the stroke of half time at Borussia-Park, but the second half lacked action after both Fernandinho and Gladbach's Lars Stindl were given their marching orders.

In the end, a 1-1 draw was enough to seal a place in the knockout rounds of the competition as Barcelona defeated Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow.

"In the end, after we got the red card we killed the game - it's not nice to see but we are through and that's the most important," De Bruyne told BT Sport after the game.

"Even before [Gladbach] scored they just wanted to defend. It was a good goal, but we played much better in the second half. Obviously we can do better but that's not the most important thing today."

City will face Celtic in their final Group C game in a fortnight.
