Roberto Mancini issued an apology to Manchester City's supporters following the club's exit from the Capital One Cup.
Aston Villa knocked the Premier League champions out of the competition with a 4-2 victory after extra time and Mancini admits that Paul Lambert's side were superior to his own.
The Italian said: "I am very sorry for the players, I am very sorry for the club and for the supporters.
"We didn't want to go out of this competition, we wanted to win this competition. We didn't play well, Aston Villa played better than us."
Mancini's team turn their attentions back to the Premier League this weekend with an away fixture against Fulham on Saturday.
