Manchester City starlet Phil Foden and Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho were dropped by England Under-19s manager Paul Simpson after turning up late to a training session.
The youngsters were both notable omissions from the team which beat Latvia 3-0 in a European Championship qualifier on Saturday.
However, it has now emerged that their absence was a punishment from Simpson for disciplinary reasons after they reported late for training.
The players are considered among England's brightest young prospects, with Foden having made eight appearances for Manchester City's first team this season, while Sancho has turned out six times for Dortmund.
Both are expected to return to the starting lineup for England's next match, however, as they take on Macedonia on Monday.
