Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany had to be substituted just 11 minutes into the game against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
The defender was making just his ninth Premier League appearance of the season, having struggled with a calf injury earlier in the campaign.
Kompany tried to play on for a time before limping off at St James' Park and being replaced by striker Gabriel Jesus as Fernandinho moved from the midfield to centre-back.
The 31-year-old played the full 90 minutes of City's 4-0 win over Bournemouth on December 23, having not played in either of his side's previous two league games.
Injuries have plagued Kompany over the last few seasons, limiting the Belgian to just 27 Premier League appearances over the past two campaigns.
