Manchester City are reportedly planning to negotiate a new contract for midfielder Rodri by the end of the year.

The 26-year-old lynchpin has been a first-team regular under Pep Guardiola since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2019, starting 134 of his 151 appearances across all competitions.

Rodri is known for dictating play from deeper midfield areas and for his defensive duties in front of the back four, but he enjoyed his best goal-scoring season in 2021-22, finding the net seven time in 33 Premier League appearances, including four strikes in the last six games of the campaign.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, City are planning to discuss a new contract for Rodri before the end of 2022, with Guardiola keen for his Spanish compatriot to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Rodri, who joined the Citizens for around £62.5m, signed a five-year contract when he arrived from Atletico, but that deal now has just two years remaining.

Guardiola is also looking to bolster his midfield options this summer and provide more competition for Rodri, with Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips viewed as his primary target.

Man City's hierarchy are also set to discuss the long-term futures of Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan, who will all see their contracts expire in June 2023.
