Sunderland are reportedly leading the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell.
The 23-year-old has struggled to break into the first team at the Etihad Stadium since arriving from Everton in a £12m move in 2012.
Frank Lampard's arrival from MLS franchise New York City on a six-month loan is expected to push Rodwell further down the pecking order at the Citizens.
Black Cats boss Gus Poyet is expected to step up his attempt to sign the England international this week, but faces competition from West Bromwich Albion and Southampton, reports the Daily Mail.
Rodwell has made 26 appearances in all competitions in two seasons with City.
