Paul Scholes marked his 700th appearance for the Red Devils with the opening goal, while Javier Hernandez, Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell also got on the scoresheet.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the match from the Theatre of Dreams.

Was the result fair?

On the second half performances of both sides, yes. Wigan had plenty of chances to get themselves in front in the first half, but United proved too much after the break. They opened up the Latics' defence with far more ease and got their goals as a result.

Man Utd's performance

They lacked a certain incisiveness in the first half but got more joy in the second. Nani was a far bigger threat after half time, while Danny Welbeck looked dangerous throughout. It won't be the most convincing display they'll give this season but they won 4-0, so who's complaining?

Wigan's performance

Judging by the first half the Latics would have been good value for a point but they soon crumbled in the second. Once the first United goal went in it was a question of how many the hosts would go on to score.

Man of the Match

Alexander Buttner - The summer signing looks every bit Patrice Evra's successor as he went on a number of marauding runs down the left. Not afraid of a tackle either, you're likely to see a lot more of him this season.

Biggest gaffe

Javier Hernandez should have done a lot better with his penalty that was saved by Ali Al-Habsi. Instead, his tame effort was routinely dealt with by the Wigan goalkeeper.

Referee's performance

Michael Oliver was wrong to give the penalty in the opening five minutes when Al-Habsi was judged to have brought down Welbeck, but the official was generally consistent throughout.

What next?

Man Utd: The Red Devils begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday when they host Galatasaray at Old Trafford. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased that he has no new injury concerns for that one.

Wigan: The Latics are beaten for the second time this season and face another tough task next weekend when they host high-flying Fulham at the DW Stadium.
