Ex-Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis hits out at Louis van Gaal

Andrei Kanchelskis says that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal does not understand English football.

Andrei Kanchelskis has joined a list of former Manchester United players to have criticised manager Louis van Gaal.

The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Michael Owen have all questioned the Dutchman's playing style and tactics in recent weeks.

Russian winger Kanchelskis, who spent four years at Old Trafford under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, has hit out at 64-year-old Van Gaal, having claimed that he does not understand English football.

"I am disappointed with the way United are playing. Under Alex Ferguson, we played in a more attacking style of football and played in a 4-4-2. Van Gaal sees things differently. This is not a head coach for Manchester United," he told Reuters.

"I just don't think that Van Gaal understands English football. A team needs to have leaders, like Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Peter Schmeichel, who can give the right things at the necessary moment and can show their leadership qualities. The coach does not want this and this is the reason for such disastrous results."

Van Gaal walked out of his pre-match press conference yesterday after just four minutes and 57 seconds amid speculation regarding his future.
