Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that he wants to one day manage the Red Devils.

Berbatov turned out for United between 2008 and 2012, scoring 56 times in 149 appearances and winning two Premier League titles during his time with the English giants.

The 37-year-old, who is also Bulgaria's all-time leading goalscorer, has confirmed that he is undergoing his coaching badges with the view to becoming a future United boss.

Berbatov referenced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as interim United manager when commenting on his future, with the latter replacing Jose Mourinho as head coach of the Red Devils until the end of the season.

"Like me, [Solskjaer] is an ex-football player for a big club and he has got the break that he needed," Berbatov told Betfair. "I am curious because I have been part of Manchester United, and some day I want to be a manager. I'll need that break too at some point.

"There are only a few 'chosen ones' who start off at big clubs - Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane both had lesser roles at Barcelona and Real Madrid before taking the reins to great success - but Ole has earned this opportunity through his good work in Norway with Molde and coaching at United.

"Who knows, one day it might be me in charge at Old Trafford. I am doing my badges now and my ambitions are high."

Berbatov has not actually officially retired as a professional footballer, and last played with Indian side Kerala Blasters during the 2017-18 campaign.
