Rio Ferdinand says that he initially believed that Ashley Young was fouled in the penalty area at the weekend, despite claims of diving from spectators.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has responded to claims that Ashley Young committed a dive to win a penalty for the Red Devils yesterday by stating that he is yet to watch a replay of the incident.

The former Aston Villa winger caused controversy for the second week running after winning a penalty during United's 4-0 win over his former club on Sunday.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Many of you saying NO penalty...I've not seen our penalty incident yet but in real time I thought the defender clipped my mans ankle/foot??"

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that recent incidents involving Young could create a negative reputation for the 26-year-old.
