Sir Alex Ferguson explains Robin van Persie omission

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits that he has not started Robin van Persie tonight due to a lack of recent match action.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he decided against starting Robin van Persie at Everton this evening because the Dutch striker has not played many games in recent weeks.

The Dutch striker, who joined the Red Devils from Arsenal last week, has been forced to settle for a place among the United substitutes at Everton.

Despite admitting that he was tempted to start the 29-year-old, Ferguson believes that he has made the right decision.

"He has not played any football. Given the expectation on him I think it is fair that he starts on the bench," he told Sky Sports News.

"There will always be a temptation with a great player like that but I think we have taken the sensible route."
