England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that his side need Wayne Rooney fit to make an impact up front.

The Three Lions missed a host of chances in their 1-1 draw with the Ukraine, and the former West Bromwich Albion boss sees the Manchester United striker as the solution to to his problems.

"The sooner Wayne comes back into our fold the better. We are short of experienced, quality front players in England," The Sun quotes Hodgson as saying.

"We'll get the best out of him, as he's desperate to play for England. He's an excellent footballer and with quality players the quality is permanent."

Hodgson also dismissed concerns over Rooney's recent international form, rejecting the notion that he underperformed in Euro 2012.

"The general feeling after the Euros, and I'm not certain I totally agree, was Wayne didn't play well in his two games. But I still think I've a very good player in Wayne Rooney.

"I've spoken to Wayne, of course. He has had a nasty injury and we are hoping that he gets over it as soon as possible."

England's World Cup qualifying campaign continues next month with a double header against San Marino and Poland.
