Jurgen Klopp is unsure exactly how to react to praise from Sir Alex Ferguson, but says that he is happier to receive words of encouragement than negative comments.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he was happy to receive praise from former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, but joked that he is unsure whether he can fully return the compliment.

Ferguson, who during his highly successful 27 years with United became a figure of hate at Anfield, claimed on Thursday that the Reds are real title contenders this term under the guidance of Klopp.

The German has made a big mark on Merseyside during his 12 months in charge of Liverpool and has welcomed his latest endorsement, though says that words mean little when it comes to gearing his side up for a title push.

"Is it allowed for me to say I like Alex Ferguson?" he told reporters. "I knew him before and he's a really nice person. He did what he had to do at Manchester and that automatically means it's not good for Liverpool.

"When he has to say something positive about Liverpool, it's better than if he would say something negative so it's all good. But it doesn't mean a lot. It doesn't disturb us or help us."

Liverpool head into this weekend's meeting with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park sitting level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table.
