Roy Makaay: 'Memphis Depay will shine at Manchester United'

Former Netherlands midfielder Roy Makaay believes that Memphis Depay will enjoy a smooth transition to life at Manchester United by virtue of their Dutch contingent.

Ex-Netherlands international Roy Makaay has claimed that Manchester United's Dutch contingent will see Memphis Depay enjoy a seamless transition to English football.

The 21-year-old winger joined the Red Devils for a reported £25m earlier this summer following a goal-laden season that helped PSV Eindhoven to Eredivisie glory.

He will team up with compatriots Robin van Persie and Daley Blind at Old Trafford, along with manager Louis van Gaal, under whom Depay previously played for the Netherlands.

Much has been made over whether or not the youngster will need time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, but Makaay says that all the elements are in place for him to enjoy a smooth transition.

He told United's official website: "It won't be easy for him but he has the quality to become a good buy. He's a great player, a very attacking player with some nice touches, and he was top scorer in the Dutch league last season, of course.

"There will be some pressure on him because the pressure is always high in this kind of situation. But he's from the same country as the coach and I understand the main reason Depay signed for United, instead of another club, was because van Gaal is there.

"I think it's good that there's not just van Gaal there as a coach but also van Persie and Blind to help Memphis adapt at the beginning and get used to English football."

Depay has 17 caps at international level.
