Paddy McNair: 'Louis van Gaal played me out of position'

Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair claims that Louis van Gaal played him out of position during their time together at Manchester United.

Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair has claimed that Louis van Gaal played him out of position during his time at Manchester United.

The 21-year-old broke into the United first team under the Dutchman, but was usually chosen at either centre-back or right-back during the early stages of his senior career.

However, having scored twice for the Black Cats during their EFL Cup victory over Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday night, the Northern Irishman insists that he is more used to playing further up the field.

"Until I was 18, I played in midfield. Van Gaal played me at centre-back. So a lot of people think I'm a defender but I've not really ever been a defender. In midfield, a number 10, I'll play wherever – so long as I score two!" he told reporters.

"When I was younger I scored a few goals so I've always chipped in. But I've waited a while for my first senior goal. I think my best position is left or right of a three in midfield."

McNair could have a chance to add to his goal tally when winless Sunderland host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
