Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says that "it was really heartbreaking" to have to leave a number of his first-team squad out of the clash with Burnley.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has said that "it was really heartbreaking" to have to leave a number of his first-team squad out of Sunday's Premier League clash with Burnley.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice as United bounced back from successive Premier League defeats to record a 2-0 victory at Turf Moor.

However, Mourinho has said that choosing his team was extremely difficult due to the response from all of the players in the build-up to the match.

"This was one of the weeks as a manager where it felt most heartbreaking with the decisions that I made, to leave Andreas Pereira and Matteo Darmian at home," Mourinho told MUTV.

"To leave [Juan] Mata and Scott [McTominay] in the stands and also to leave on the bench with not one minute on the pitch [Anthony] Martial, Ashley Young, the goalkeeper and everyone that didn't play.

"It was really heartbreaking because the week was fantastic and every player was part of this game."

United are next in action away to 100% side Watford after the international break.
