Ronald Koeman tried to sign Memphis Depay for Southampton

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman reveals that he attempted to sign Memphis Depay last summer.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has revealed that he tried to sign Dutch international Memphis Depay last summer.

The 21-year-old joined Manchester United for £25m in June, but Koeman told reporters that he approached Depay in 2014.

The winger turned down the move to stay in the Netherlands and went on to have a spectacular final season with PSV Eindhoven, scoring 22 goals, and Koeman admitted that he would have liked the opportunity to work with the forward.

Koeman said: "Not close, because at that time the player decided to stay in Holland, it wouldn't have happened. But, yes, I would have liked to have had him here!"

Depay has scored three goals for the Red Devils so far this season in all competitions but is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League.
