Wayne Rooney has described his return to boyhood side Everton after 13 years at Manchester United as "a no-brainer".
The 31-year-old penned a two-year deal with the Toffees yesterday, ending an illustrious career with the Red Devils which saw him claim every piece of silverware possible.
Speaking to the media for the first time today, Rooney explained that he made the decision to leave after a chat with United manager Jose Mourinho following a season which saw his game time limited to just 15 starts in the Premier League.
"Once I knew [Ronald Koeman] was interested in bringing me back to Everton, it was really a no-brainer. Where I wanted to come play. It was getting it done, thankfully it's done now, and we can get on," he said.
"I always play like I've got a point to prove. I'm ready to play, I want to win, I want to be successful at this football club. I feel good, I'm excited. It's a challenge which is the right time and I need it at this point in my career.
"It hadn't gone stale [at United]. I enjoyed my time there of course, but I needed to play more games. I didn't play that often last season. I know I'm at my best when I'm playing games consistently, so I spoke with Jose and it was the right time for me to leave and go and play somewhere else. I firmly believe Everton is the right club for me to do it.
"There were other options there, but once I knew that Ronald wanted to bring me back to the club, I knew it was the only place I was going to be playing my football."
Rooney will turn out for Everton for the first time this Thursday in a pre-season friendly in Tanzania.
