Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United supporters to have patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the club's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Red Devils once again infuriated their supporters with a performance devoid of energy or craft, with Matty Longstaff scoring the only goal of the game on 70 minutes.

United have now gone 11 games without an away win in all competitions, and have won just two of their last 13 Premier League fixtures.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Schmeichel said: "Before we all go mad about what needs to be done and gets carried away on how 'bad' it is, let's just remind ourselves of how long it took Sir Alex Ferguson to create a winning team.

"Manchester United building success takes time!"

Many supporters have called for the dismissal of Solskjaer after the result left United two points above the relegation zone.

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United have appointed four different permanent managers, with Jose Mourinho lasting the longest, having spent two and a half seasons at Old Trafford.
