Gareth Southgate 'to hold talks with Wayne Rooney'

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate will reportedly meet with Wayne Rooney on Thursday ahead of his squad announcement.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate will reportedly hold talks with captain Wayne Rooney tomorrow as he prepares to name his first squad.

Southgate was appointed manager for the Three Lions' next four fixtures - including World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia early next month - following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce for comments he made to undercover reporters.

According to The Mirror, Rooney contacted Southgate shortly after his appointment to seek clarification on whether he would remain as skipper and was granted a meeting on Thursday, two days before Southgate names his squad.

The 30-year-old was dropped by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho from the starting lineup of their encounter with Leicester City last weekend and could also be rested for Thursday's Europa League tie with Zorya Luhansk.

Rooney, who was made captain under Allardyce's predecessor Roy Hodgson in 2014, is England's all-time leading goalscorer and the most-capped outfield player.
