Manchester United reportedly decide to delay holding contract talks with Jose Mourinho due to the current dominance of neighbours Manchester City.

Manchester United have reportedly decided to delayed talks over a new contract with Jose Mourinho.

Earlier this season, it was suggested that the North-West giants planned to hold discussions with the Portuguese, who currently has a deal in place until 2019.

However, according to The Mirror, the club's hierarchy are contemplating whether Mourinho is capable of ending Manchester City's dominance at the top of the Premier League in the coming years.

At the midway stage of the campaign, leaders City hold a 13-point lead over United in the standings, with United dropping more points on Saturday night as Mourinho witnessed his side concede a last-gasp equaliser to Leicester City.

United have the option of triggering an extra 12 months on Mourinho's contract, but it remains to be seen whether the 54-year-old will get the opportunity to remain at Old Trafford past a third year.

Last season, Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League, but United have not challenged for the league title since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
