Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal against European 'super league'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal labels the idea of a new European 'super league' as "rubbish".

Louis van Gaal has stated that he is against the possibility of Europe's top football clubs playing in a new 'super league'.

The Manchester United manager was asked for his views on the issue at a press conference today after reports emerged earlier this week that officials from the likes of United, Arsenal and Chelsea had discussed the possibility of a new elite division.

"Everybody knows in my career I am against all super leagues," Van Gaal told reporters.

"Sport is to be the best. It is rubbish, I said that when it is not just the best teams.

"It is commercially driven. Sport is about winning, not coming second or third."

Officials have reportedly denied that any such talks about a breakaway league took place.
