Louis van Gaal 'did not offer resignation after defeat to Southampton'

Louis van Gaal reportedly did not offer to resign as manager of Manchester United following last weekend's defeat to Southampton.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reportedly did not offer to resign following his side's defeat to Southampton.

There were reports in the media that the Dutchman, whose contract at Old Trafford does not expire until the end of the 2016-17 campaign, was willing to walk.

However, according to BBC Sport, after United's 1-0 loss to Southampton, Van Gaal did not inform executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he wanted to quit.

United have won two of their last 10 games in the Premier League, and in matches against Liverpool and Southampton Van Gaal's team mustered just one shot on target.

Rumours that United may be considering a managerial change intensified when reports claimed that Woodward spoke with senior players, who are believed to have suggested that Van Gaal no longer has the support of the dressing room.

United are fifth in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
