Robin van Persie wowed by support of fans ahead of move to Fenerbahce

Robin van Persie vows to make Fenerbahce fans "happy" after being taken aback by the crowds that greeted him at the airport in Istanbul.

Robin van Persie expressed his amazement when he was greeted by hoards of Fenerbahce supporters after landing in Turkey on Sunday.

The 31-year-old is closing in on a transfer to the Turkish club after spending three seasons at Manchester United.

After touching down at the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, the Dutchman had to squeeze his way through hundreds of fans, who were eager to witness his arrival.

Van Persie told the crowd: "I have seen a lot over the years but I have never seen anything like this. I hope that I'm going to make you happy It's an honour."

The forward, who spent eight years at Arsenal before moving to Old Trafford, scored 10 goals for United last season.
