Jamie Carragher: 'Manchester United need new striker to challenge for title'

Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United need to sign a top-class striker next summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United need to sign a top-class striker next summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

United extended their unbeaten away run in the top flight to 20 matches after a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but the stalemate saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side fail to score against a big-six opponent for the sixth consecutive match.

Carragher feels that the acquisition of someone such as Tottenham Hotspur talisman Harry Kane or Borussia Dortmund star Erling Braut Haaland could inject that much-needed quality in the final third to see the Old Trafford outfit competing with the likes of rivals Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

"Right now, I think Manchester United have a quality issue. When the ball actually goes up to the front players, is there enough quality there? They are the top scorers in the Premier League, but have they got that player who can score goals in decisive games and take them to the league title?" Carragher said on Sky Sports News.

"People talk about United needing a right winger, and they do, but they need a centre-forward more. If United had Marcus Rashford on the left, a new centre-forward, and Mason Greenwood supplementing a new right-winger, that would address the lack of quality.

"You look at the options. In this country it's Harry Kane, or Erling Haaland who is coming through. You wonder whether they are players Manchester United should be targeting."

Manchester United are now focused on a trip to Crystal Palace on Wednesday before the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday.
