Former West Ham United favourite Tony Cottee has urged the club to prove their ambition by signing Michael Owen.
The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer having been released by Manchester United.
Owen has indicated that his intention is to remain in the Premier League next season and, following the Hammers' promotion to the top flight, Cottee thinks that the experienced striker would be an "ideal" addition to Sam Allardyce's squad.
Cottee said: "West Ham need to make three or four new signings and Owen would fit the bill. A new striker is a must but also a proven Premier League scorer would be ideal.
"Everyone talks about Owen's injury record but you know he guarantees reaching double figures in goals which would take so much pressure off the rest of the players.
"I know the fans would be excited about signing someone of his calibre. It would send out a message the board want to back the manager with quality."
Owen, who scored seven goals in 52 matches for the Red Devils, only made 18 starts in three seasons for the Old Trafford club.
