David de Gea is expected to leave Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of June, according to a report.

David de Gea is reportedly now expected to depart Manchester United on a free transfer this summer, with the Spaniard set to end his long association with the 20-time English champions.

The 32-year-old has been with the Red Devils since 2011, making 545 appearances for the club, including 58 outings in all competitions during the 2022-23 campaign.

De Gea won the Golden Glove in the Premier League last season, having kept 17 clean sheets in the competition, but he was criticised for a number of high-profile errors.

The goalkeeper's contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of this week, and there has still not been an announcement over an extension in Manchester.

A recent report claimed that De Gea had previously agreed a new deal with the Red Devils, but the club ultimately backed out of a deal, which has led to the current situation.

Man United are believed to have placed a lower contract offer on the table than had been originally agreed.

The club do have the option of activating a further 12 months in De Gea's current deal but that would keep the Spaniard on his extortionate £375,000-a-week wages, which is not an option.

According to the Daily Mail, Erik ten Hag's uncertainty is the main reason why Man United performed a U-turn in the contract agreement.

The report claims that the team's current head coach has reservations over De Gea following some under-par performances last season, which included notable mistakes against Sevilla and West Ham United.

De Gea was also criticised for the last goal that he conceded, with Ilkay Gundogan's second strike in the FA Cup final at the start of the month finding a route into the bottom corner of the net.

The experienced stopper is now allegedly preparing to leave Old Trafford this summer, with an agreement at this stage of proceedings thought to be unlikely due to the recent developments.

A number of clubs from the Saudi Pro League are believed to be willing to offer De Gea a generous salary, which could see him leave European football behind to play in a league that boasts the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kante.

Inter Milan's Andre Onana is currently being linked with a move to Old Trafford as a potential replacement for De Gea, with the stopper previously playing under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Brentford's David Raya is also allegedly still being considered by Man United, who will return to pre-season training at the start of July to prepare for the 2023-24 campaign.
