Manchester United and Liverpool are both out of the running to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, according to a report.

Manchester United and Liverpool will reportedly both miss out on Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt this summer, with the centre-back to choose between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Earlier this week, it was reported that United, Liverpool, Barca, PSG and Juventus were the five clubs battling to sign the 19-year-old in this summer's transfer window.

According to RMC Sport, though, De Ligt has now ruled United, Liverpool and Juve out of the running, meaning that Barca and PSG will go head to head for the signature of the Netherlands international.

De Ligt captained Ajax to a league and cup double during the 2018-19 campaign, while he also played a key role in the Dutch side's progression to the last four of the European Cup.

United could now switch their attention to Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, with the Red Devils said to be preparing to launch an £84m bid for the Senegal international.
