Matthijs de Ligt 'to pick from five interested clubs'

Manchester United and Liverpool are battling Juventus, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, according to a report.

Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly amongst five clubs battling to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt in this summer's transfer window.

The 19-year-old captained Ajax to a league and cup double during the 2018-19 campaign, in addition to playing a key role in the team's route to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

According to Diario Sport, both United and Liverpool are in the running for the teenager, but the English duo face competition from Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

De Ligt, who has a contract in Amsterdam until June 2021, scored seven times and contributed four assists in 55 appearances for Ajax last term.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Juve had moved above Barca and United to lead the race for the Netherlands international.
