A report claims that Ashley Williams is a transfer target of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly set his sights on signing Swansea City defender Ashley Williams during the summer.

Ferguson is expected to be in the market for a centre-back at the end of the current campaign, with doubts over Nemanja Vidic's long-term fitness and Rio Ferdinand's contract due to expire.

Having considered a number of options, Ferguson has identified Welsh international Williams as the ideal player to bolster his defensive options, according to The People.

The report has claimed that the Swans would hold out for £10m before they considered parting with the 28-year-old, who has a contract at the Liberty Stadium until 2015.

Ferguson and Williams were involved in a verbal spat earlier in the campaign after the United boss had criticised the defender for kicking the ball at Robin van Persie's head while he was on the ground.
