Manchester United have reportedly conceded defeat in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has been United's top target throughout the transfer window, as they looked to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic at the end of last season.
While United are believed to have agreed a £85m deal with Barcelona, De Jong has remained firm in his stance that he wishes to remain at Camp Nou.
With Barcelona needing to sell players to improve their finances, United were still looking to sign the Netherlands international even after signing Casemiro from Real Madrid.
However, according to sports writer Sam Pilger, the Red Devils are now accepting it is very unlikely that De Jong will sign for United before the transfer window closes.
#MUFC remain great admirers of Frankie de Jong but now accept it is highly unlikely he will join the club in this transfer window.

Although De Jong may not be heading to Old Trafford, United are still looking to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes, with the club looking to sign Antony and Cody Gakpo from Ajax and PSV Eindhoven respectively.
