Manchester United wanted a £12m survival fee to be included in a proposed loan deal with Newcastle United for Jesse Lingard, according to a report.

Manchester United reportedly told Newcastle United that they wanted a £12m survival fee to be included in a proposed loan deal for Jesse Lingard.

The England international, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, has been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle in recent days.

However, it is believed that a possible switch to St James' Park has now collapsed, with Eddie Howe's side not prepared to meet Man United's demands.

According to ESPN, in addition to a £2.5m loan fee and covering Lingard's wages, the Red Devils wanted another £12m if the attacker helped the Magpies avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

As a result, the report claims that a loan move for the 29-year-old would have cost Newcastle in excess of £15m, leading to the Premier League strugglers pulling the plug on the proposed deal.

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to have shown an interest, but Ralf Rangnick's side will allegedly not allow him to join a top-four rival on loan.
