Atletico Madrid reportedly reject Manchester United's €12m bid for Kieran Trippier before telling the Red Devils to come back with an offer of €40m.

Atletico Madrid have swiftly knocked back Manchester United's opening bid for Kieran Trippier and have told the Red Devils to at least treble their offer, according to a report.

Despite serving a lengthy ban for a breach of betting rules, Trippier played a key role in Atletico's La Liga triumph last term, chipping in with six assists in 28 top-flight matches.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur man is being heavily linked with a move back to England, with Man United and Arsenal both thought to be weighing up a summer swoop.

According to Mundo Deportivo, though, United have moved first to table an official bid of €12m (£10.3m) for the Englishman, but Atletico took no time at all to reject the offer.

The report adds that Trippier - under contract at Atletico until 2023 - will not be allowed to leave the Wanda Metropolitano for anything less than his €40m (£34m) release clause, leaving United in a difficult position as they also attempt to get a deal for Jadon Sancho over the line.

Trippier is one of three right-backs in the England squad for Euro 2020, and the 30-year-old is in contention to start in Sunday's opener against Croatia at Wembley.
