Ivan Toney is reportedly asking for a salary higher than that of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes next season, should he finalise a transfer to Old Trafford this summer.

The 28-year-old has netted four goals in 13 club appearances since his return from a betting ban, following his impressive 20-goal tally in the Premier League last season. He also marked his debut for the England senior team with a goal last month, converting a penalty in their 2-2 draw against Belgium.

Despite Brentford moving out of the relegation danger zone, the Bees' forward has been strongly linked with a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium at the end of this season, with Arsenal previously considered the frontrunners to secure his signature.

However, the Gunners are set to face competition in that regard, as it is understood that Manchester United have now joined the race to acquire the striker's services.

Man Utd's new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to strengthen the Red Devils' squad in the summer following another disappointing campaign at Old Trafford.

Toney looking to become top-five earner at Man Utd

According to The Sun, Toney is seeking a wage of £250,000 per week, equivalent to £13m annually - a figure that is believed to be £10,000 per week more than Fernandes currently earns.

The report adds that despite wearing the armband, Fernandes is not Man United's highest earner. At £350,000 per week, that title is held by Casemiro and on-loan Jadon Sancho.

Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford are reportedly on contracts worth £340,000 and £325,000 per week, respectively, while Anthony Martial and Mason Mount both fetch £250,000 for a week's work.

However, with Sancho, Varane and Marital all potentially being moved on this summer, United will benefit from a significantly lower wage bill that could be used on new arrivals.

Bees to cash-in on Toney in the summer

Brentford, on the other hand, are likely unable to meet Toney's new salary demands and will be eager to capitalise on the value of the England international now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires in June 2026.

Bees' boss Thomas Frank dismissed speculation last week that the club were considering a lower asking price for the attacker but had conceded back in February that he anticipated the striker's departure during the summer transfer window.

Frank said, "The reality is he's got one more year left on his contract in the summer. I think he's been pretty open about playing for a top club in the future.

"There's a couple of scenarios; he leaves in the summer, he leaves in the winter, or he stays until the end. If he's leaving - whatever, summer, winter or the summer after - I think it will be fantastic seeing him playing for a top club."

Securing three points away at Luton Town in their next game would propel the Bees 10 points clear of the relegation zone, while United are facing a major challenge to qualify for the Europa League next season after losing ground on the top five in recent weeks.
