Melbourne Heart end 19-game winless run with victory over Newcastle Jets

Melbourne Heart save themselves from a 20-game winless run at home by beating Newcastle Jets 3-1 in their A-League clash.

Melbourne Heart have saved themselves from reaching a 20-game winless run at home by securing a 3-1 victory over the Newcastle Jets.

Heart created the first chance of the game through former Liverpool player Harry Kewell, who drove into the centre of the field to play the ball into the path of Iain Ramsay.

Ramsay launched a shot from the right edge of the area, but the goalkeeper managed to tip the ball clear.

Minutes later, Kewell tried his luck from just outside of the area, but once again keeper Mark Birighitti was able to knock the ball out of danger.

Against the run of play, the Jets were able to break the deadlock when a corner was swooped in to find the head of Taylor Regan, who managed to hammer the ball home to give the visitors the lead.

Heart managed to reply through Ramsay, who received the ball from Kewell in the box and chested it down to set himself up for a left-footed volley, which settled into the bottom-left corner.

Almost instantly, Melbourne took the lead when Mate Dugandzic latched on to a delivery into the box to head the ball into the back of the net.

After the break, James Brown had a good chance to draw level by driving a low shot towards goal, but goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne jumped just in time to prevent the ball from reaching the net.

Melbourne put any doubts behind them by grabbing a third goal from Dugandzic, who managed to beat the keeper to grab his second of the game.

Despite creating some chances, the Jets failed to get themselves back into the game before the final whistle.
