Preview: Bromley vs. Newport County - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's League Two clash between Bromley and Newport County, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

For the first time in a competitive fixture, Bromley and Newport County will square off on Thursday, with that League Two contest taking place at Hayes Lane.

A 2-0 victory over Morecambe has the Ravens sitting 13th in the table, one point ahead of Newport, who claimed an emphatic 6-3 win at home to MK Dons.

Match preview

It has been a long time since Andy Woodman has seen his side go pointless, with Bromley currently riding a seven-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

That streak is at nine games domestically, as this team have won three of their previous four matches in League Two while posting consecutive clean sheets.

They are unbeaten in their last four league matches at home but have only won one of their previous nine domestic encounters at Hayes Lane (2-1 over Gillingham).

With 27 points after 20 league contests, Bromley have accumulated a dozen fewer than they had at this same stage of their National League campaign a season ago.

However, another promotion is not out of the realm of possibilities for them, as they are just four points below Notts County and a spot in the playoffs.

In 2024-25, the Lillywhites have had five second-half advantages in League Two and failed to win, dropping 11 points in the process.

Newport are coming into this clash on a high note, scoring six goals on Saturday, the most for them in a single EFL contest since their return to League Two in 2013-14.

Nelson Jardim's men netted more goals in those 90 minutes than they had managed in their previous eight matches across all competitions.

While they are winless in five consecutive competitive away games, the Port have points in three straight League One affairs as the visitors.

If they can collect at least a point in their final two league contests of 2024, Newport will match their longest unbeaten run in this competition from last season (seven matches).

The South Wales club have not lost any of their previous six EFL encounters away from home against sides that are based in London.

The Exiles have won just two of their 35 Boxing Day league fixtures as the visiting team, with their last triumph coming in 2013 against Wycombe Wanderers (1-0).

Team News

Woodman went with the same starting 11 against Morecambe that he had in their previous league game, while Josh Passley and Levi Amantchi were the only new Bromley players that did not feature against Port Vale, who saw the field last week.

Omar Sowunmi and Michael Cheek netted in the first and second half respectively last time out, with the latter scoring his 11th of the campaign, equal to Matty Stevens of Wimbledon for the league lead.

Meanwhile, Jardim made three changes from the side that began their fixture versus Colchester United (0-0 draw), as Anthony Glennon, Luke Jephcott and Bobby Kamwa replaced Joe Thomas, Geoffroy Bony and Kyle Hudlin.

Bryn Morris and Kamwa each had hat-tricks last weekend, the first three for the former in League Two this season, with the latter now tied with Hudlin and Aaron Wildig for the team lead at four.

Bromley possible starting lineup:
Smith; Grant, Sowunmi, Reynolds, Odutayo; Arthurs, Thompson; Dennis, Whitely, Congreve; Cheek

Newport County possible starting lineup:
Townsend; McLoughlin, Brennan, Jameson, Glennon; Antwi, Evans, Morris; Hudlin, Jephcott, Kamwa

We say: Bromley 2-2 Newport County

Newport should be feeling good about themselves after such an impressive attacking display last week, but they also tend to leave gaps in behind their backline, conceding three or more goals in six domestic contests this season.
