Patrick Vieira takes charge of New York City FC

MLS outfit New York City FC appoint former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal.

MLS club New York City FC have appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal.

The former France international, who had been working as the head of Manchester City's Elite Development Squad, will begin his work at the North American side on January 1 ahead of the new MLS campaign.

New York City, who have the likes of David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo in their ranks, failed to make the Major League Soccer playoffs this season, which led to former boss Jason Kreis leaving the club.

"I am delighted to take up the role of head coach," Vieira said in a statement. "To work with this squad, with (sporting director) Claudio Reyna and Rob Vartughian and the fantastic support team that is in place, is an exciting prospect for any coach.

"This established football set up, together with a passionate and loyal fan base - located in a special city which I know well - makes for an unparalleled opportunity that I am delighted to seize with both hands. I cannot wait to get started."

Vieira represented the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Juventus during an illustrious playing career.
